SEEN IN DRESDEN-MAY 2013

May, as is often the case, has been a real teaser. She started off with delightful spring weather–pleasantly warm, sunny days that brought out the crocuses and daffodils, greened up the grass and started the first lace-like leaves on the trees and the first hints of color in the lilacs. Our first red-breasted grosbeaks showed up on May 5. One had the unusual, pale apricot-colored bib that I remarked on last year, so it seems that the same individual came back to the same spot. What fun. On the 7th, the hummingbirds showed up, grateful for the feeder, but also tasting every blossom, however small, whatever color, just acting delighted to be back here again. On the 13th, two gorgeous male orioles landed on the suet, and showed up again for the next couple of days. By the 17th , the orioles had gone missing (presumably resting up from their long trip), but I caught a male catbird offering a tasty morsel to his lady love, and off they went together. Neighbors reported catbirds splashing in a new birdbath. I thought I was imagining things when I saw little lights outside the window at bedtime, but others reported seeing a few early fireflies as well.  The orioles, including at least one female, came back and got to work on nest-building. Springtime glories!

Then May pulled her twist: a late threat of frost. It didn’t materialize, but scared the peach, apple and cherry trees that were in full blossom. Things had been getting a bit dry–some of us even had the hoses out—and the rains came just in time, but cold, mean rains that just don’t want to stop. In five days we’ve had at least 4” of rain, and I have a fire going again. Now the weather report tells us to expect near 80 degrees in a couple of days! At least that should dry out the ground a bit so the long grass full of buttercups and blowing in the wind, can be dealt with, and all the seedlings and plants from our local plant sales can be gotten into the ground without drowning. When you do that, make sure to check yourself and family members carefully for ticks after time outside, and hold on for the next twist in our journey toward summer.
