Spotlight on….Young Adult fiction!

Between the Lines– New York times bestselling author Jodi Picoult teams up with her teenage daughter Samantha van Leer to bring this tale to life!  Find out what happens when the reader falls for the handsome prince in the fairy tale..and he falls for her too!

Hollow Earth– Another collaboration, this time between actor John Barrowman (aka Captain Jack Harkness of Dr. Who and Torchwood fame) and his sister Carole Barrowman.  Matt and Em Calder are twins with the special power to bring art to life and enter it at will and their abilities thrust them into a race against time to save themselves from those who would entrap them for their powers!

The Unnaturalists- Tiffany Trent’s imaginative steampunk fiction introduces us to Vespa Nyx, who has powers she is just beginning to understand, and a world in which the lines between technology, science and myth collide.

 SEEN IN DRESDEN

Summer is really upon us now, with the longest day on the 21st, and a Super Moon on the 22nd, a bit obscured by clouds for us in Dresden, but it did peek out from time to time. June has been a pretty “normal” month, in fact, rather idyllic, with adequate rain, lots of sun, no temperature extremes, and dare I say it?, not so many black flies!

Rumor has it, a better than average strawberry crop is just beginning to ripen. Time to get out in the fields and pick your own! Such a pleasant activity, whether you get out in the early morning or in the heat of the day, the peaceful fields striped with rows of fragrant berries are dotted with colorful shapes bent over and moving slowly down the rows filling baskets (and of course sampling a few along the way, shhh).

Turtles crossing! The time is here for snapping turtles to find their way to their favorite nesting spots to lay their eggs. People who live along the rivers see them every year and hope they will not have a fatal encounter with a car. One report of such a fate came in, unfortunately. Someone on the River Road has made signs to warn motorists to watch out for them. Cars and humans of course are not the turtles’ only worry. Skunks often, if not always, find the nests along the Clancy Road and feast on the eggs. If not skunks, foxes find them tasty too. No wonder the really huge turtles are not often seen anymore.

Also on the River Road, a harbor seal has been spotted several times by several surprised people around the lower bridge. Apparently on rare occasions they do venture up rivers this far away from their saltwater habitat, chasing after fish.

On Everson Road, a common snipe was spotted, with its round body and very long bill, perfect for digging worms out of the boggy land they prefer. No one sent the spotter on a snipe hunt though, which is a well-known practical joke played on novice campers who are sent off with bags to catch a snipe, which is notorious for being hard to hunt, with their zigzag flight pattern when flushed, giving rise to the term “sniper”, for someone with good enough aim to hit a snipe.

Bird sightings reported in response to the monthly appeal for same, besides the Snipe, include Baltimore Oriole, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Pileated Woodpecker & Bald Eagle. This writer, taking over for the month while our regular columnist is abroad, is happy her Catbird has returned to entertain with his unique repertoire, being one of the species such as Mockingbirds, which mimic the songs of others. One female Oriole was determined to get some string off a clematis trellis, working hard to loosen knots, but when she flew off with a piece she would get pulled up short because it was not really untied, just loosened. After watching this struggle for a while, the “watcher” took pity and put some loose string out and did see her fly off with one.

And lastly, and not so happily, are two reports of critters from the wilds trying to make themselves at home in the house. One reported a cheeky weasel or mink sitting upright on the bed in the guest room, how it got there yet to be determined. The other report was red squirrels giving a merry chase in the house, and the hole they chewed to get in was soon found and plugged.
